Service Learning in the Latino Community
Course Description: This course is part of your Spanish language learning experience, and offers you the opportunity to interact in a personal way with members of the local Latino community, thereby enriching your understanding of Hispanic cultures and the Spanish language. As a community-based learning experience, the course provides students with career-related experience working collaboratively with community agencies to address community concerns / issues.
Reflective Narrative: This course was a really fun course to take. It was in this class that I really learned to apply myself and use the language with native speakers in a non-classroom setting. I chose to help with the State Senate campaign for Anna Caballero, and you can find a more detailed explanation of that here. But this course was more than just working in the community. In this class, Dr. Fernandez taught what it means to serve and the effect that it has on the local community. We read fascinating articles and stories from the Chicanx community, and we talked extensively about Spanglish and its use in the United States. We were assigned to form a survey about Spanglish and ask a few people, so I took advantage of living in the 21st century and chose to share my survey in a few groups on Facebook. You can find the responses to my survey here. Our final assignments were to give a presentation regarding our Service Learning site and a self-reflective essay about our personal journey to bilingualism. This class fulfilled an MLO 5 objective.
