WLC 300 - Major Pro Seminar
Course Description: This course introduces students to the Japanese Language and Culture, or Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures majors. Students acquire knowledge and understanding needed to fulfill Major Learning Outcomes for the programs, including literature, culture and linguistics, and to develop individual learning plans. The course examines opportunities in related professional and career paths, such as graduate education and teaching credential preparation.
Reflective Narrative:
This course was taught by many different teachers in the World Languages and Cultures program, coming in a couple times throughout the semester to discuss their specialties, whether it was Spanish or Japanese Linguistics, Literature, Research habits, etc. It was also in this class where we began to take steps towards our Senior Year and make some headway on the things we would need to accomplish before graduating. Some of these activities were writing Personal Statements and creating our personal website that you see here. We also were given lectures from CSUMB Graduates to hear about different paths we can take and options we can explore, whether it is the Teaching Credential Program, studying at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, or even working for the United Nations. We also took time during this class to complete the preliminary STAMP test to test our knowledge of Spanish through four measures: Oral, Listening, Reading, and Writing. As Spanish majors, we need to meet a given requirement of fluency to graduate, which I feel my education here at CSUMB has prepared me for well. It was a really eye-opening class, especially for me, who wasn't really sure at the time what he wanted to do with his degree. This class is part of the MLO 6.
